VoiceScope FAQ
What does VoiceScope measure?
It estimates fundamental frequency (F0) in hertz for voiced parts of a recording, converts accepted values to notes, and displays statistics and a time-based contour.
Is voice frequency the same as pitch?
F0 is a physical repetition rate measured in hertz. Pitch is the perceptual experience associated with frequency. They are closely related but not identical in every listening situation.
What is a normal speaking voice frequency?
There is no single normal number. Distributions vary with age, physiology, language, emotion, task, and recording conditions, and population ranges overlap.
Why is median pitch the main result?
The median is resistant to isolated high or low frames. The mean is also shown, but a few errors or expressive peaks can move it more strongly.
Does VoiceScope upload my audio?
No application server receives the microphone audio, WAV, pitch contour, or history. Those operations run in the browser. Anonymous GoatCounter page-view analytics are separate and do not intentionally include recording data.
What does Smart mode remove?
It targets short points or runs that disagree with nearby speech and have weak detector confidence. Clear short phrases and sustained changes are protected.
Why does the result change between recordings?
A voice changes naturally. Room noise, microphone distance, warm-up, hydration, emotion, passage, and speaking style also affect the sample.
Can I use VoiceScope for singing?
Yes, especially for sustained notes and pitch contours. It is not a full vocal-range protocol and does not replace a tuner that reports cents deviation.
What is stored in History?
Up to 30 recent recordings, their WAV data, pitch contour, statistics, and settings are stored in IndexedDB in the current browser profile, subject to a 1 GB app limit and browser storage policies.
Is this a medical test?
No. VoiceScope is an acoustic reference tool. Persistent hoarseness, pain, breathing difficulty, or sudden unexplained vocal change should be discussed with a qualified clinician.
